Chinese Propaganda Posters: From Revolution to Modernization
Published in Paperback by Pepin Press (1997)
Author: Stefan Landsberger
Average review score:

Provocative Propaganda
A superb collection of good quality color and "black and white" plates that give an insiders peek of the efforts of Red China's propaganda machine. The books many illustrations are a feast for the eyes and mind on their own right, but also offer a historic perspective for the inclined. Here you'll find many examples of East meets West in illustrations that mix academic painting with traditional Chinese landscape painting, a very interesting combination.I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and recommend it highly to anyone interested in masterful visual art and or political sublimation.

Chinese Storytellers: Life and Art in the Yangzhou Tradition (C & T Asian Literature Series)
Published in Paperback by Cheng & Tsui (27 September, 2002)
Authors: Vibeke Bordahl and Jette Ross
Average review score:

An accompanying VCD gives a glimpse of the full experience
The collaborative production of Vibeke Bordahl (Senior Researcher, Danish Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, Copenhagen) and photographer and Chinese culture expert Jette Ross (1936-2001), Chinese Storytellers: Life And Art In The Yangzhou Tradition is a remarkable and informative study of the ancient Chinese art form of narrating classic stories. A survey of the history of this practice, as handed down from master to student, precedes several adventurous and vivid tales, each presented both in English and in the original Chinese. Black-and-white photographs offer a visual glimpse of the storyteller's gestures and poses, and an accompanying VCD gives a glimpse of the full experience of a master storyteller's craft. Chinese Storytellers is a unique and highly recommended addition to Chinese Culture Studies collections and supplemental reading lists.

A Chinese Winter's Tale: An Autobiographical Fragment (Renditions Paperbacks)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Renditons Press (01 December, 1986)
Authors: Yu Luojin, Rachel May, and Zhiyu Zhu
Average review score:

An Inspiring and fruitful read
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good, thought provoking read. And at the same time gain some basic knowledge of the Cultural Revolution, the laws and class backgrounds (among others) in China. This sort of genre is known as 'literature of truth'. It is an autobiography, but more that, it is a story of love. It is about life's struggle, of hope and never giving up. I can honestly say that this has been an inspiring and fruitful read for me.

The Church in China
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (January, 1985)
Author: Carl Lawrence
Average review score:

Insight, history and perspective on the Chinese Church.
This book is one of the most interesting non fiction books which I ever read; I regret that it is no longer in print.

Carl Lawrence provides the background and the history of the Chinese Church. He writes of the government sponsored church, the "Three Selves Movement"; he compares the spontaneous "house church" movement. Lawrence discusses where these movements began, and where they are going. He interrupts his narrative only to give testimonies -- amazing testimonies -- mirroring the first century church as described in the Book of Acts.

Lawrence's description of the "house church" movement shows his love for the Chinese people. As a result of reading this book, I have a great deal of respect for the writer, a better understanding of the Chinese church, and a greater heart for the persecuted church. I would encourage any Christian to read this book, and to pray for the persecuted Church.
